Up, Up, And Back Down
What goes up must come down. Ever heard that saying? When it comes to Nevada’s Desert Tortoise, the release of helium balloons is not a celebration. In fact, the helium balloons released by humans at parties, etc. are responsible for many deaths of the Desert Tortoise. Why is this? Well, Las Vegas and Henderson are surrounded by the desert. When those balloons land, they often times land in the desert. Once ingested by the Desert Tortoise (and other wildlife), the balloon gets stuck in the digestive tract. Basically, it stops the animal from being able to absorb nutrients. So next time you’re partying in Sin City, please think twice before letting helium balloons loose. Pop a bottle instead!
